Very engaging, fun read with our heroes

Megan says, “I’m always troubled when I hear about people dying.” This is one of the reasons I love this book—and the Astral Alliance series—so much. At the Speed of Mind takes on the evil of child trafficking with love, mercy, and resolve. Megan is determined to fight for the kids without compromising her moral compass. This third book brings fast-paced action, deep strategy, and a lot of heart.

Throughout the series, Megan and the other kids grow into a strong team. As captain, Megan earns loyalty through love and sacrifice. Her teammates follow her freely because she helped free them. Yet, she’s often reckless, doing what they call her “hero thing.” That begins to change in this book. Crystal has a hard conversation with her, insisting Megan needs someone to watch her back—“on her six.” Megan listens, and Crystal repeatedly saves her, helping her grow into a better leader.

Morality is a critical part of this fight against child slave trafficking. At times, in the heat of battle, Megan prays and calls on God’s help because it is all in His hands. They can’t do it without divine help. I’m reminded of the quote from St. Padre Pio: “Pray as though everything depends on God and work as though everything depends on you.” I see this reflected in Megan. Her connection to God is what makes the difference in the mission and gives it meaning.

Some characters believe that ending child trafficking justifies taking the lives of enemies. But is it not also evil to take a life to achieve a good end? In moral theology, the ends never justify the means—and mercy triumphs over justice. While justice might demand punishment, mercy and love are greater. This becomes clear when mercy wins people over to Megan’s cause—people who were unknowingly involved in the trafficking but, once their eyes were opened, chose a new path. Love inspires and love triumphs over all.

Megan inspires those around her with sacrificial love. Her teammates respond freely, with loyalty that reflects the kind of love found in heaven.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s fast-paced, full of challenges, tough decisions, and meaningful sacrifices. For readers who enjoy science fiction and action with a strong foundation of Christian morals, I recommend At the Speed of Mind and the entire Astral Alliance series.
