Book Review: The Wild Robot Escapes (Volume 2)

The Wild Robot Escapes continues the story of Roz, the wild robot, in this middle-grade science fiction story. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but as the title suggests, Roz must escape. The story follows her adventure as she breaks free from human civilization and attempts to return to the wilderness island where she spent the first year of her life. That island is truly her home, where her animal family and friends live—especially her goose son, Brightbill. Her life is there.
The book explores questions about how a wild robot survives, escapes, and ultimately finds her way back. How does Roz interact with the world around her, both human and wild? The author clearly did his research and tells a compelling, well-crafted story. I found myself deeply invested in Roz’s journey, hoping she would succeed in getting home. It makes a great story because of the compassion and kindness Roz shows toward everyone she encounters.
Like the first book, this one is a quick read, with many short chapters. I finished it in just a few days. I also loved the illustrations throughout the book, in each chapter, which complement and enrich the story. They are simple but endearing. I was very satisfied with the ending, though I will refrain from giving away any details. Needless to say, I didn’t know what to expect in how things would be resolved, and the story took an unexpected yet satisfying turn.
I recommend this book for both middle schoolers and adults. It is engaging for readers of all ages and, overall, a wonderful story. It makes for a relaxing and enjoyable read, especially as a break from heavier subjects.
